AAA COOPER

AAA Cooper Transportation is a non-union, family-owned company. The transportation company majors in Less-Than-Truckload, International, Dedicated, Port and other related services in transportation. The company’s headquarters is in Dothan, Alabama. Up to date, the company is owned and operated by the Dove family.

John H. ‘Red’ Dove started his association with the transportation industry when working with his father hauling logs from the Alabama woods to the saw-mill in the 1930s. Mr. Dove bought an interest with P.C White Truck Lines in 1951 and in 1955, Mr. Dove purchased the ownership that remained in P.C White Truck Lines then later changed the name to AAA Motor Lines. Earl and Mack, his sons, obtained their degrees in transportation from the University of Tennessee and got together with the family business between 1959 and 1962.

In the 1950s, 1960s and the onset of the 1970s, the company growth potential was limited to purchasing companies who possessed routes that were underutilized. This followed the regulation by the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC). Therefore, in 1969, AAA Motor Lines Incorporation bought Cooper Transfer Company incorporation resulting in the formation of AAA Cooper Transportation or ACT.

Mack and Earl afterward recognized the beginning of industry deregulation in 1973 so they positioned the company for that occurrence by Improving cost measurement systems and management training. ICC approved the company to serve all of Florida in 1976. The passage of the Motor Carrier Act of 1980 led to deregulation of the industry in July 1980. With the completion of its opening of Florida in 1978, ACT acquired expansive authority for operation in North and South Carolina and Georgia. As a result, AAA Cooper Transportation entered the 70s with $3 million in annual sales and at the completion of the decade, the annual sales increased to $43 million.

In the 1980s, ACT continued its expansion by purchasing Haynes Motor Lines in 1986 adding nine extra terminals. Earl sold his 50% company ownership to Mack in January 1989. Nine new terminals were purchased by ACT in early 1990 from the former Bowman Transportation Company. The new facilities were used for new terminal openings as well as for relocating certain existing terminals to expanded and improved science. In 1989, annual sales grew to $136 million.

In the 1990s, the south saw the continued expansion of ACT’s terminal network. ACT’s first terminal was opened outside the southeast in Chicago in 1994. Towards the end of 1994, ACT opened a terminal in Minneapolis. In that same year, Reid, Mack’s son joined the company after graduating from Auburn University. Reid was named the president of ACT in 2001 after holding many positions in the company from driver, truck washer to terminal manager.

The company’s annual revenue surpassed $500 million in 2006 for the first time.
