MAERSK
Maersk, a company based in Copenhagen, Denmark, is a business conglomerate that deals in the sectors of transport, energy, and logistics. The company has subsidiaries and offices across 130 countries and approximately over 76,000 employees, making it the largest container ship and supply vessel operator worldwide since 1996.
Maersk was founded in Svendborg, April 1904 by Captain Maersk Moller and the son Arson Peter Moller. Peter Moller had four children but his second child Arnold Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller became a partner and head of the firm in 1939; upon the death of his father. In 1993, Mc-Kinney Moller was succeeded by Jess Soderberg, the new CEO. He continued as the chairman for 10 years later until December 2003 when he was 90 years old. Michael Pram Rasmussen took over afterward. Mc-Kinney Moller was one of the managing owners of the company until his death.
Maersk is structured into two primary business segments, logistics, and transport segment plus the energy segment. The two departments have several subsidiaries such as container shipping and other related activities. These activities include APM (A.P. Moller-Maersk) terminals; training, tankers, shipping, and other offshore activities, oil and gas activity, retail activity, other industrial companies, shipyards, interest in Danske bank among many other activities.
Notably, the largest business area for A.P.Moller-Maersk is container shipping and related activities since provided almost half of the group’s revenue in 2008. Shipping related activities comprise of logistics, worldwide container services, forwarding and terminal activities with the brand names: MaerskLine, Safmarine, and Damco. However, in 2017, Maersk was one of the main victims of the NotPetya ransom malware attack that led to severe disruption of operations for several months.
Maersk Line Transport and Logistics
Under transport and logistics, Maersk Line is the largest operating unit by revenue and staff of APM, having around 25,000 employees (in 2012). The company was described as the world’s largest overseas cargo carrier in 2013 operating over 600 vessels with 3.8 million container capacity. In 2015, Maersk Line was the largest container fleet with 15.1% of the global TEU(Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit).
In 2006, Maersk Line acquired the most huge container ship in the world to date. The E–class vessel, Emma Maersk, was obtained from Odense Steel Shipyard from then, other ships have been built. On February 21, 2011, ten larger container ships of the triple E-class, each of 18,000 containers capacity were ordered from Daewoo.
In December 2011, Maersk Line teamed up with the US Navy on testing 7-100% algae biofuel on the Maersk Kalmar. Soeren Skou took over as the CEO of Maersk Line from Eivind Kolding in January 2012. Later in 2012, following the sanctions regime led by western countries especially the US in Iran, the company stopped its business in Iran so as to prevent scathing the company’s business.
Maersk Shipping Line Global Coverage
Maersk Line is far-famed for its global coverage. Apart from trading majorly in Asia-Europe and Trans-Atlantic trades, the company offers extensive coverage between South America and Europe as well as to Africa
A.P. Moller-Maersk’s terminals business unit has its separate headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands. It operates a global port, Terminal and Inland Services Network in 36 countries and 57 ports on five continents plus 155 Inland Services operations in 48 countries. Port and Terminal Operations include Europe, North America, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia. In Limon and Savona, new projects are under construction.
The company opened up the innovative concept of Daily Maersk in 2011 that provided premium guaranteed service from the ports of China to European base ports. Maersk Line had to cut down services due to oversupply despite immense support from the trade. The company restructured its product to include upgrades to Asia to Australia, India to West Africa and shipping from China to US routes.
In the first quarter of 2018, APM’s revenue grew by 30% to USD 9.3bn with growth in all the business segments and strategic transformations well underway. The company offers its customers a vast range of services.
Maersk Services Offered
Services offered by Maersk line include International Freight services and Shipping Services, Reefer Cargo, Special cargo, Inland transport services and used shipping containers for sale.
International Freight and shipping services deal with Dry cargo, door to door, hanger beams which allow transport of garments on hangers without further packing, 40’9’6’’ containers with a total capacity of 85 cubic meters, 20’ containers up to 28.2 metric tons payload and 40’8’6’ containers up to 28.8 metric tons payload. Customs clearance, storage, lashing bars and lashing rings that give cargo additional security are also provided for with this type of service.
Moreover, Reefer cargo deals with meticulous cargo handling to ensure produce is fresh, and refrigerated shipping containers. Advantages are reduced CO2 emissions, optimal product temperature, unique container design to ensure maximized payload and reduced energy consumption.
Inland Transport Services takes care of full-service transport solution, timely pick-up and delivery. It provides constant monitoring and quality assurance and is insurance arranged.

A 3.6 star out of 5 rating is due to the fact that most employees like the work-life balance and culture as well as the good working environment. On the contrary, for some, their job opportunity has no room for growth or advancement and it is also a challenge for them to maintain work-life balance. Some customers have complained about mishandling of shipment, refusal to release refunds and late deliveries.
